The Adopt-an- Estero Program of Misamis University with the Department of Environment and Natural Resources- Environmental Management Bureau 10 (DENR-EMB 10), entitled as Ecological Strengthening through Rehabilitation and Orientation (ESTERO) Program took another step in showing environmental initiative through the Environmental Classes for Mothers (ECM).
ECM module was developed based on the findings of the research on Awareness on Solid Waste Management and Functions of Creeks among the Residents along Carangan Creek in Ozamiz City, wherein it was disclosed that mothers are the foremost person tasked with household waste disposal, thus the Environmental Classes for Mothers (ECM) was created.
ECM aimed to educate the mothers from the 283 households living along Carangan Creek on the functions and importance of the creek with the end goal of an enhanced water quality of the creek. It was made up of 14 series of environmental outcomes-based classes held at Barangays Carangan, Lam-an, San Roque and 50th Barangay, on Saturdays from February 18- March 15, 2014 at 8:00 - 10:00 in the morning. Two ECM classes with 20 participants each were accomplished every Saturday. MU National Service Training Program (MUNSTP) coordinators were the facilitators assisted by volunteers MUNSTP students and staff from different offices in Misamis University.
Interactive educational games such as word & puzzle games with prizes were utilized during the class to directly involve the mothers affectively. On some note, all participants attended did not go home empty handed because they have received an environmental kit containing leaflets with environmental message and groceries from ESTERO partners such as MetroBank Burgos Branch, Shoppers Plaza, Development Bank of the Philippines (DBP), Ong Hoc Trading, McDonalds- Gegee Megamall, Ria Thrifty Mart, Lam-an Shell, Lourdes Pharmacy, ACE Mktg, and Jollibee Rizal Main Branch. At the latter part of the classes, mothers were asked how households can help protect and rehabilitate the Carangan creek, some of the answers were to segregate and dispose their garbage properly instead of throwing them at the creek, encourage one another to clean their areas, and plant herbs, flowers and vegetables whenever there’s a vacant lot near the creek.
